Losing a pet - will I ever love again?

http://www.marilynmilano.net Losing a pet can be one of the most difficult and heartbreaking things to deal with. As a volunteer in pet loss support at our local animal shelter, I hear time and again "I don't know if I'll ever get over this", or "this is the most difficult thing I've gone through" "Will I ever love again?" Having lost several dogs myself over the course my adult life (I usually have 2 or 3 at a time) I can tell you that yes, it IS one of the most difficult things to deal with but—there is hope—you CAN love again. I did. The most important lesson I've learned out of my own experiences is that each new dog I've brought into my home has been different, yet I've fallen in love with each and every one of them. Lola, the dog in the video, is the rescue I adopted when I lost Glory at age 15 from kidney failure. I loved Glory with all my heart, and I love Lola just as much. She is different than Glory but just as wonderful...and each dog has brought with them different lessons and different joys! There IS life after loss, and it can apply to other things too—a job we thought was the be all end all, a relationship with a significant other that seemed to be the high point of our lives until it fell apart, even a home, a city, a neighborhood—if we open ourselves to new experiences, and keep an open mind and heart, we might just find that the new dog or cat or love or job or home is just AS wonderful, only different. Here are two pet loss quotes that express my feelings very well. The risk of love is loss, and the price of loss is grief. But the pain of grief is only a shadow when compared with the pain of never risking love." (Hilary Stanton Zunin) "Unlike some people who have experienced the loss of an animal, I did not believe, even for a moment, that I would never get another. I did know full well that there were just too many animals out there in need of homes for me to take what I have always regarded as the self-indulgent road of saying the heartbreak of the loss of an animal was too much ever to want to go through with it again. (Cleveland Amory) MM -- Seattle based pianist and vocalist Marilyn Milano blends her love of music with her compassion for animals through her songs. A little bit Carly Simon, a little bit Carole King, a hint of Joe Cocker, and a whole lotta herself, Marilyn's voice and songs touch your emotions and move you to want to "make a difference". Marilyn also speaks on the topics of communication, making a difference for a cause you care about, and animal rescue.
