Ulster Freedom Fighters hitmen Torrens Knight, Jeffrey Deeney and Stephen Irwin appear in court in Limavady in 1993. Torrens Knight was facing charges over the UFF summary execution of IRA leader James Kelly in the town of Castlerock. As a mob of IRA supporters threatened the men Torrens Knight reminded them of the IRA man he had killed - 'What about Kelly?' he taunted them as the police ushered him into the van.

James Kelly (IRA) buried after being executed by Loyalist commandos

James kelly was the IRA godfather in the north of Norther Ireland. He was responsible for numerous sectarian murders and a an ethnic cleansing campaign in the town of Dunloy. Loyalist commandos from the Ulster Freedom Fighters had been following him for weeks before eventually pinning him down to the town of Castlerock. The UFF unit - containing the infamous Torrens Knight - sprayed his work van with bullets from an automatic rifle. Kelly and three of his colleagues died instantly. Two of the other were also later claimed as IRA members.

Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars is a potent example of the redeeming power of music & the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship & emerge with optimism intact. From their humble beginnings in West African refugee camps Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars have performed on some of the world's most prestigious stages & matured into one of Africa's top touring & recording bands. Throughout the 1990s, the West African country of Sierra Leone was wracked with a bloody, horrifying war that forced millions to flee their homes. The musicians that would eventually form Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are all originally from Freetown & they were forced to leave the capital city at various times after violent rebel attacks. Ruben Koroma & his wife Grace had left Sierra Leone in 1997 & found themselves in the Kalia refugee camp near the border with Sierra Leone. When it became clear they would not be heading back to their homeland anytime soon, they joined up with guitarist Francis John Langba (aka Franco) & bassist Idrissa Bangura (aka Mallam), other musicians in the camp whom they had known before the war, to entertain their fellow refugees. After a Canadian relief agency donated two beat up electric guitars, a single microphone & a meager sound system, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars were born. Kidnappings in Syria Spark Protests, Concerns

Euronews describes the immediate chaos. "The main road to Beirut airport was blocked with burning car tires by friends and relatives of the missing men." The missing were returning from a pilgrimage to Iran when their bus was held up in the Aleppo region of Syria. While most sources agree on this detail, their reports differ on the amount and gender of the hostages. Euronews reports 13 Lebanese men were kidnapped. While Voice of America says that several dozen women were kidnapped along with 11 men. However, Al Jazeera says, while women were a part of the group, they were not kidnapped along with the men. That report says the women returned to Beirut early Wednesday. One woman tells reporters about the captors. "'They pointed their guns and got into the buses. First they took us to the fields saying that they are taking us away from the shelling, while they took us there to kidnap the men...They said they are the Free Syrian Army.'" But according to sources, the Free Syrian Army says otherwise. Here's France 24 with more. "The Free Syrian Army leader, Riad Al-Asaad, has denied that his group has anything to do with this kidnapping, but it's not clear that he has complete control on the ground." This is my final project for Literature Analysis and Composition I. May 22, 2012. The following description is my "project outline" or script that I used to create the video. It is written in our regular English in case early modern English is difficult to understand. Description of Unit: Romeo and Juliet, the greatest love story of all time is a tragedy as the cursed lovers end their lives, but their sacrifice has ended a violent family feud. Description of what you learn and why you enjoyed: Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story of all. Not only is their story a tragic one, the circumstances of Romeo and Juliet's deaths are an elaborate plot with twists that allow for an interesting story and interested me. At first I thought Romeo and Juliet was just a mushy love story that only girls would like, but after reading it, the fights, the feud and the events that lead to their deaths showed me that it is not just a love story for girls, but also a story enriched with action and great sacrifice. How or why this unit is educational to you: 1. What I learned that is valuable: Romeo and Juliet has taught me how to read and understand some of the classic literary stories that most people are intimidated by. The language is unlike what we use today, but throughout this lesson, I have come to understand more of the modern English used in all of Shakespeare's works. One Last Great Wickedness When Peter was thirteen years old, his father committed suicide. Later in life, he comes across some letters his father had sent from the trenches of World War One. Certain words and phrases in these letters reveal a side of his father the man had never suspected when he was growing up. As he digs deeper and deeper into his family's past, he uncovers a world he realizes he had never understood, could never even have imagined. Just beneath the surface of the apparently quiet, civilized, well-bred world of his family he had known as a child, there was a completely different reality, a parallel universe of suppressed loves and hates, sexual deviations and appallingly violent actions, involving not only his parents and grandparents and the rest of his family, but also finally -- and most devastatingly of all -- himself.
