BOOK REPORT: DEVIL(ed) eggs
Sometimes a book comes out & a shit ton of people read it & it's on the big table at borders (RIP) for like 2 years next to whatever Malcolm Gladwell just wrote. Sometimes I join the ranks of the shit ton and see what all the fuss is about. In the case of Erik Larson's Devil in The White City, I did not. Which as it turns out was a POOR DECISION AKA DECISION WITH NOT ENOUGH NICKELS. In short, I know I'm like a decade late on this one (the book came out in 2003), but I just finished Devil in The White City and I loved it so much that I haaad to do a book report. This one goes out to Rip Van Winkle. Devil in The White City centers on two contemporaneous narratives: (1) the conception, construction, and legacy of the 1893 world's fair in Chicago & (2) the lethal career of HH Holmes, one of the world's first -- and most prolific -- serial killers. Initially, the dovetailing of the stories felt a bit contrived, but as the book progressed, I came to appreciate the juxtaposition and what it implied about modernity & innovation. The world's fair in Chicago not only changed the reputation and image of a city that, at the time, was regarded by many as a morally depraved, pig-slaughtering, culturally inferior frontier town, but also introduced the world to a variety of inventions both novel (shredded wheat, the Ferris wheel) and life-changing (alternating current, the Ferris wheel). It was an insanely vast undertaking, one that underscored a weirdly genuine form of patriotism ...
