FULL TEXT BELOW It Happens All the Time Teddy's green Styrofoam slippers talk shit to him as he shuffles in circles across the sticky brown linoleum floor in the public detox. They sneer with every step: "You fucking loser." Teddy's been living coiled in filthy clothes and wearing the stench like a name tag because sitting in a Laundromat means letting people gawk through the transparent wreck of you; letting strangers watch the last coins of your bankrupt life roll out through your torn pockets; letting them see how stained you are, how badly you need some bleach. He's been living in a swirling bucket of withdrawal sweat and vomit; it spills empty into the shrill trumpet of craving, that blaring riot of his inner life, the axis of his daily decent into the chemical quiet of the velvet exit. He's been standing alone out on Huntington Ave. waiting for the 39, a handle of vodka under his arm where the curve of her shoulders used to be, before she finally tore herself out of his life like meat off a bone, became a feast for another man, someone with an appetite, gave Teddy what he had come to want in the end: a ride home to JP without having to talk, a night unleashed to feed all his hungers with another drink and another dose.
