Bird vs. Wild: Baby Chickadees Taking Flight From Cat
Every year Black-capped chickadees nest in a birdhouse in our yard. Today, Friday May 18, 2012, the baby birds took flight. But, not without great risk. In fact, it was a true story of survival that the little fledglings even made it this far. We have two cats and there are plenty of stray cats, wild raccoons, opossums, skunks and other critters who are always looking for an easy meal. the cheeseburger birds are on the top of their menu, if not the birds then the eggs themselves. One young fledgling took flight, the runt, the last one to leave the nest after the mother or father bird coaxed it out with a small worm or grub. Unfortunately, the little bird didn't have it's wings yet and landed on the ground directly in front of our cat which was sleeping near the fence, big mistake, would have made Bear proud. :) Rarely do these birds, or the Jenny wrens that nest here also, make it to flight school. Today was an exception to the rule and four little bublack and white bundles of feathers soared like eagles into the tree tops and began to learn their familiar song which sounds very much like cheeseburger. An old friend who is an avid mushroom hunter called these little Black capped peeps the cheeseburger birds and the thought sticks with me today. If you call out them in a rhythmic voice "cheese burger", they will almost immediately respond back. Backyard tour
Just a small backyard tour, with a cold start and ride around with my Craftsman LT1000. I just adjusted the valves on the V-Twin 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton so it starts a lot easier now. There is also a couple of cute critters in the video, my 13 year old long haired siamese Chevy, and our 2 year old Chiweenie Flower. Thanks for watching
White Tail Spider 1
You wont see many spiders move like this. These tiny critters have a nasty bite and with their distinct shape and marking are very easy to recognize. Oddly enough though a lot of people have never heard of them. Redbacks tend to get more publicity for some reason... anyways before i killed this one i recorded it cos im always getting asked "Whats a White-Tail?" X_x this one is tiny as you'll see when i show my finger tip for comparison. Ive seen them 4 times this size, they can vary in shades of brown, black and grey, sometimes a mustard color. They wander and dont make webs, their venom causes ulcerations on the skin and can make a victim very sick. Their movement is sluggish unless they are immediately threatened in which case they will bolt! They can be distinctly identified by the white tip on its abdomen and a cigar shaped body. I dont spare these because im terrified my daughter will get bitten, i feel less threatened by spiders that make webs and stay stationary. If you see one of these in your home, you will likely have more close by as they breed from a central nest, usually in old wood furniture, under beds and in the roof. en.wikipedia.org for more info

The state-of-the art animatronics were created exclusively for Brookfield Zoo, which is where they will be seen for the first time ever! The exhibit, located in a 5000-square-foot tent along the Xtreme BUGS pathway, will immerse guests in the world of bugs, taking them on a journey through the habitats of some of the smallest—yet most important—critters. In addition to regular zoo admission Xtreme BUGS is $5 for adults and $3 for children 3-11 and seniors over 65 (half price for Brookfield Zoo members). Children 2 and under are free.
