Fishing—connecting with our community is the twenty third vignette in the Observing Practice Series. An expectation of the EYLF is that educators build on children's existing knowledge and experiences. This playful vignette demonstrates how in this context 'where crocodiles are part of life ' the children embark on a fishing adventure, where safety, fear and excitement are all a part of it. This short experience, as captured here, has the potential to support children's learning across many areas. What do you think? How do you connect children's family and community experiences in your place? These vignettes ask educators to observe closely and describe what you see- the interactions, the play, the environment and the learning. Think about questions such as; What was the thing that stood out in the vignette to you? What questions would you like to ask? These are small snippets in a day and much else would have been happening that is not visible to the viewer. But the aim is to sharpen our observations and thinking about what we see and then to think about how this might inform their planning in their own service. What next?
